This article explains the answer to the question posed in the title. And with the release date of Mass Effect 3 only a week away, its definitely worth a read. It delves into several issues we've been talking about in class such as gender equality and what video games offer over other similar mediums. Not to mention it invests in what I discussed in my paper/presentation about the Absurd, as well as touching on a few other of the other papers/presentations presented in class, such as the one on The Singularity is Near as well as the one regarding dystopias. Anyway, I found it very interesting and you should give it a read.

Does the article contain any spoilers? Because I'd really like to read it, but I'm still working on ME1, haha. I already pre-ordered 3 though, and I'm saying that without regret (for now). I mean, even if everything else is lame, there's maleShep/dude action. Just saying.
