Battle for the Living Room

A defining feature of the last two cycles of console design, the Battle for the Living Room refers to both Microsoft's and Sony's attempt to be a dominant force in the post-PC era.  The Battle for the Living Room represents a backdoor strategy whereby each company introduces their console with the intent of it becoming a, if not the, primary portal through which a household accesses the internet and other services. This battle is part of a larger trend seen in the Telecommunications industry involving content creators, content providers, and service providers.

  1. This is interesting, my question is is this more of a battle of content/hardware or that of marketing? Both the Xbox and Playstation are comparable in terms of features and hardware, but we all know diehard fans of either console particularly, in my opinion, due to advertising campaigns. This raises questions associated with so-called Dark vs. Light goods, generally marketed to men and women respectively, and called so because of the color of their casing, rather than the actual attributes of the item being sold.
