The Original Project 3 Idea

ok so we had a first idea that we decided to put on the back burner and forgot to mention to the class. It may have been the better one, i dont know thats why im asking you. We were thinking about a game that teaches you how to do something (look up Fract on Kotaku, i posted about it the other day), then we thought about a game that teaches you how to write code, and program a video game yourself. it could be really interesting if you started out having to code your digital body into existence, and then your environment around you out of the white or black nothingness.

once you beat the single player and learn enough to handle yourself, it opens up with a couple MMO platforms such as an arena where you essentially have a wizards duel with code. writing your own weapons, shields and environmental effects and then use them to fight. other platforms could include an open world where people can build anything, and on top of anyone else's things. for example i could write a bedroom, and anyone else could come and put monsters under the bed, fireworks that go off when you flip the light switch and a closet door that leads you through all the levels of dantes inferno. who knows what people would do, thats the beauty of it.

So anyways that was the first idea we had, it was a little out there so we decided to come up with a different one today, for creativity sake, and then ask y'all which sounded better. but as i said we kinda forgot to bring up the original idea because we got focused on the new idea. but now that i have I WANT A COMMENT FROM EVERYONE!!!!!! even if (i would say especially if) you dont like it. at the very least say which one was more interesting to you.

  1. So would you be an AI creating a real world avatar to upload their code into?

  4. In terms of thinking about programming being the goal within the game, you could go in several directions...

    Rules aren't bad.

For example, check out the spy game Gunpoint - http://gunpointgame.com/

In the puzzles, you aren't just stealing documents and escaping. In order to effectively solve the puzzles, you rewire the electricity in the buildings so the lighting and trapdoors, etc, behave differently. Even though they are puzzles, there are multiple complex solutions.

  5. I think the dueling with code idea is really interesting! Especially how it seems like it could become pretty surreal. Would there be leveling up and stuff to gain new abilities? Or would you have all your code abilities right away?
