A romp with 3d gaming...

3d gaming, aka the future of gaming. Keyword future. It is no secret this 3d trend has crept its way into our media. I have spent the last few days gaming in 3d. I like it. However, it isn't really where it needs to be. The technology does add depth, and a few things pop out of the screen, but I am not on my couch dodging bullets and feeling like arrows are wizzing past my face. I also do not like the detail that is lost in the transition to 3d in games. I see good thing in the future of 3d gaming, and games like resistance and uncharted do look fantastic with the extra level of depth added. But, until developers spend more time working with the technology, and the technology itself improves, 3d gaming is just a trend.

  1. After obsessively stalking the video graphics industry for nearly 10 years, I don't feel they've realized the goals they set for themselves in 2D graphics yet. The marketing hype from eight years ago boasted that games would be realtime raytraced on the video hardware from six years ago. Like 3d movies, 3d games feel like a gimmick to me, designed to make a quick buck. 2d video games haven't been taken as far as they can go yet. However, tech like the kinnect offers new ways of interacting with and within the game world. Coupled with 4th and 5th generation 3d, who knows.

  2. The iPad 3 will have stereoscopic 3D and Apple argues that it'll be more streamlined than Nintendo has been able to achieve. Just imagine if the iPhone and Droid had this capability. Someone recently approached me about working with stereoscopic photography. They are making an ebook about architecture that can be experienced on the iPad 3.

The technology has uses beyond gaming. It's not just a trend.
