Grinding refers to the act of spending a large amount of time leveling up your character/s. This can come about as either a response to the game greatly increasing in difficulty or as a player attempting to become over powered. Seen largely in early JRPGs, it is a concept akin to random encounters in such that it is largely viewed as an being antiquated and unnecessary. Games such as the Dragon Quest series and early Final Fantasy games feature grinding.
I totally agree with your definition, however, it got me thinking about farming... Like farming items, and it got me to thinking is farming cheating? I'm not sure if I consider farming cheating, but it just got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteI would consider farming a grey area. Farming is largely dependent on the game itself and also goes back to camping. Farming to corner a market is something I would consider unethical and cheating, in that it breaks the game and unfairly corners the market on a, although digital, limited resource. Farming for personal advancement isn't something I would consider cheating and would relate back to grinding.
