A term that can generally refer to a gamer who would not consider themselves one. Downmarket gamers include so-called casual and social gamers to an extent, and contrast with hardcore gamers in their self-representation within the gaming spectrum. Although a console-playing teenager is generally what is brought to mind in association with the term gamer, downmarket gamers are a far larger and steadily increasing gaming demographic.
I believe that Wii or iPhone gamers are included in this. Parents and Grandparents largely drive this segment and would never consider themselves gamers even though they spend just as much, if not more, time playing these games than traditional gamers do.
