Sound Knowledge

so in Mary Flanagan's article she talks about vision being the primary form of knowing. "visual imagery is used to describe 'pure knowledge.'the forms that this pure knowledge takes are 'eidos' and 'idea' - in other words, things that are seen."

anyways, this sparked an idea. this may already exist in some games, if so they are rare because i havent really come across any. but what if there was a game that you couldn't play with the sound off. that auditory cues were extremely essentul to beating the game. such as hearing someone walking towards you but you cant see them or something. does anyone know games like this?

also why stop there what about smell. what if you had to cook something but the only way to know it was done was if the system emitted a pleasant or burnt smell. ya i know these are kind of silly examples, but why have the other senses been considered? (aside from a visual manifestation of sound such as radar). anyways just some things to think about. technology is advancing quick, why do we have to keep traditional models of gaming?

  3. its an interesting idea but i think digital scent might be more plausible once we can artifice the senses through cerebral input.
