Avatar

When it comes to avatars. I usually feel comfortable in 'their' skin. For instance, somewhere under all this daedric armor is Wilhem Vladamir III Jr. My character from skyrim. Just a simple Argonian trying to make it in the land of the nords. But really what is under that armor is myself. I was just sitting in front of my tv, then all of a sudden i am a prisoner and  heading to be executed. That is the back story of my character. Then I as Wilhem Vladamir II Jr. destroy everything in my path. I am confortable with this character because of the freedom this game allows. Halfway through the game i actually forgot i was an argonian, and was like how the fuck am i breathing underwater, i cant do that.
Snake. I am comfortable with snake, because he is everything i am not. Bad ass, master of CQC, clone. Part of the reason that i am so comfortable with this avatar is because snake comes with a lot of baggage. You are not snake. You play this game wishing you were him. He has a rich story that draws you into his character. You play most of MGS as third person. You are dragged along behind this avatar watching him, sneak, shoot, and snap necks.

Nathan Drake. AKA Dude raider. But so much better than Lara Croft in so many ways. Lara Croft is all T&A. Nathan Drake is Lara Croft and Indiana Jone's bastard child. What is so great about Drake is his personality. As with Snake, you wish you were Drake. You get lost in the personality of the character, and as with Snake you accompany them on their journey. Also noted that the game Director and writer for the series is Amy Hennig. also know for her work on the soul reaver series.

One avatar system that has shown lots of potential is face mapping for games. I know this has been in a few sports games, as well as the tony hawk series. But I would like to see a greater support for this system. Imagine putting your face on your Skyrim character. While I see why this system would not work for the MGS series or Uncharted, games like Skyrim, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, or any other game that has some sort of character creation could greatly benefit from this technology. If Wilhem Vladmir III Jr. had my actual face, i could die happy.

    Hahaha.

Okay so, while I love the Uncharted series...if you really stop and think about Nate - who is supposed to be a hero - he's kind of a mass murderer. D: But he's so damn likeable! I've been conflicted lately.

    2. My favorite part of the article though...
Gordon Freeman noticeably hasn't gone for a shit, had a sit down or eaten in 20 years.

  2. I love that you forgot about breathing under water! I like losing myself in the game. It's a nice feeling to be the one earning all the awards and kicking all the butts, instead of the avatar.
